What’s the History?

When you arrive at the Last Chance Mining Museum, you’ll quickly discover why it’s a local treasure. This historic site is in the former Jualpa Mining Camp just above downtown Juneau. Now, the Gastineau Channel Historical Society has transformed this retired mining operation into the spectacular museum it is today!

What Will You See?

From the moment you walk through the front doors, you’ll be greeted by Renee Hughes and her husband, Gary Gillette. This dynamic duo not only leads tours at the Last Chance Mining Museum, but they are also the leaders of the Gastineau Channel Historical Society. Be sure to ask them about the cave-in of the Treadwell Mine! It’s a fascinating story.

In addition, you’ll see a variety of unique displays. These exhibits include the restored buildings, original mining equipment, the world’s largest air compressor, and a layered glass map of the tunnel network.
