Land Your Best Dining Experience at the Hangar on the Wharf

Dining is the cornerstone of many successful vacations. Juneau, AK, is home to many diverse seafood dining options because of its proximity to lakes and rivers, and the popularity of fishing in the area. There are endless dining options for those visiting Juneau, but Yelp!, TripAdvisor, and Google all agree that The Hangar on the Wharf is one of the most outstanding places to eat. For 21 years, the former hangar for Alaska Airlines has been serving fresh-caught seafood, sizeable steaks, prime burgers, and soups and salads—for those wanting lighter fare. Plus, since it’s just one minute from our inn, there’s no reason not to visit this novel restaurant during your stay. It’s Not Just the Food: Reasons You Should Visit The Hangar on the Wharf

Community Involvement

Being in the restaurant business is more than a cash flow calculation to The Hangar on the Wharf. Every Thanksgiving, the restaurant donates its space to the Salvation Army of Juneau and provides a full Thanksgiving dinner to those who otherwise might not have a full belly and good company on the holiday. Without their space, this event wouldn’t be possible. The Salvation Army uses Hangar’s kitchen to smoke 60 turkeys and bake countless pumpkin pies. An article posted in the Juneau Empire headlines, “Community involvement again high at annual meal.” The Hangar on the Wharf’s seat at the table of community engagement helped to serve over 500 Thanksgiving meals in 2018.

Novel Venue

The restaurant’s aviation decor isn’t just to create an illusion that the Hangar is familiar with planes and flying. This eatery is located within the Historic Merchant’s Wharf, which served what eventually became Alaska Airlines. The restaurant’s goal over the past two decades has been to honor Southeast Alaska aviation history. They accomplish this by serving excellent food and locally brewed beer and filling their eatery with staff and locals who hold its history dear. Oh, and the waterfront view doesn’t hurt, either.

Support Local Breweries

The Hangar on the Wharf has a beer selection for everyone. With 125 different bottles and 25 beers on tap, you’d be hard pressed to leave without a belly full of brew. Going hand-in-hand with preserving their history and community involvement, the Hangar offers a wide range of locally brewed beers from Alaskan Brewing Co. and Haines Brewing Company. You might think that over 100 beer choices would be enough, but the restaurant keeps a forum open at the bottom of their beer list for visitors to request new beers!

The Food is Pretty Darn Good, Too…

There’s no debate that the dining at the Hangar is an unparalleled experience. The Hangar was featured in Bon Appetit and Juneau Empire’s Reader’s Choice Award 2018 third-place winner in “Restaurant (Overall)”. This makes sense. There’s almost no other place you can watch seaplanes descend while indulging in macadamia-crusted halibut that’s served with pineapple curry.
