History of the Mine

Located on the south side of Douglas Island, the mine was founded by John Treadwell and was in operation from 1881 to 1922. In total, nearly $70 million in gold was mined. In the 1910s, the mine was deemed too unstable to continue work and was shut down in 1922.

Walk the Treadwell Mine Historic Trail Walking Tour

Today, visitors to Douglas Island can walk the Treadwell Mine Historic Trail Walking Tour, which was organized and maintained by the Treadwell Historic Preservation & Restoration Society. Throughout the town, you’ll find markers which identify various important locations. While many of the structures were torn down, you can still see some of the equipment that was once used. For example, the vanner rollers and drive pulleys, though covered in moss, are still fascinating to observe. The only building still standing is called the New Office Building, and was established towards the end of the mine’s active years. Other highlights of the walking tour include the Treadwell Plaza, the Superintendent’s Mansion, and Treadwell Club. Be sure to take your camera on this tour, as you’ll want to snap plenty of gorgeous photos of the artifacts.
