A Taste of Summer in Juneau
Summer in Juneau has a way of keeping you outside. Long days invite you to hang out by the water, spend a few extra hours on the trail, or follow Glacier Highway. And when hunger strikes? There’s no need to head indoors.
Juneau’s summer food scene is made for eating in the fresh air. Food trucks serve up local seafood without the formality. Breweries pair pints with mountain and harbor views. Fresh Alaska salmon tastes even better surrounded by rainforest. And sometimes, the perfect lunch is one you assemble yourself and carry to a favorite park or waterfront spot.
If you’re visiting Juneau this summer, consider this your excuse to eat your way around town while spending as much time outside as possible.
Start With Juneau’s Food Trucks
Food trucks are a natural fit for a Juneau summer: casual, local, and easy to work into a day of exploring.
Deckhand Dave’s is one of the best-known examples. Located in downtown Juneau, the food truck specializes in sustainably caught Alaska seafood, with halibut, rockfish, salmon, shrimp, oysters, and other rotating specials finding their way onto the menu. The fish tacos have become a particular favorite, and Dave’s helped establish Juneau’s first dedicated food truck park.
Food trucks also give visitors an opportunity to sample Juneau beyond traditional sit-down dining. Keep an eye out for what’s operating during your stay. Summer brings seasonal businesses and changing specials, so part of the fun is seeing what you find.
Grab your food, find a seat outside, and settle into the slower pace of a summer afternoon.
Get Your Crab Fix at Tracy’s
There are few names in Juneau seafood with a following quite like Tracy’s King Crab Shack. Tracy’s began with a simple idea and a single pot in 2006. Today, it’s a Juneau institution known for enormous red king crab legs, crab cakes, bisque, and a lively waterfront setting. Its second location offers open-air dining right next to the water, with mountains rising in the distance.
For us at Silverbow Inn, there’s also a personal reason to send guests Tracy’s way: owner Jill’s son, Solomon, works there.
We’re always happy to support other independent and family-run businesses in Juneau, especially places that have become part of the fabric of the community. Tracy built the business from the ground up, and its loyal following is a testament to what can happen when a small local operation becomes part of visitors’ Juneau traditions.
Come hungry. King crab is not a light snack.
Follow the View to Auke Bay
A day at Mendenhall Glacier doesn’t have to end when you leave the trail.
Continue toward Auke Bay and reward yourself with a stop at Forbidden Peak Brewery. This family-owned brewery overlooks scenic Auke Bay and has a covered outdoor patio and FireBar where you can sit outside with a locally brewed beer and watch the harbor below. Food is available from Red Spruce AK, making it an easy post-hike stop when everyone is ready to get off their feet for a while.
It’s the kind of place that makes a compelling argument for venturing beyond downtown. Auke Bay gives you a different perspective on Juneau, with boats moving through the harbor and mountains framing the view.
Sip Something Made in Juneau
Juneau’s local beverage scene is another reason to slow down between adventures. Downtown, Amalga Distillery produces spirits right here in Juneau. Its tasting room serves samples of Juneauper Gin and Single Malt Whiskey when available, along with a rotating selection of cocktails.
Local breweries and tasting rooms can make an easy addition to a summer afternoon, especially when you’re looking for something less structured than another excursion. Check current hours and outdoor seating availability while you’re here.
Eat Seafood With a Waterfront View
King crab and fish tacos aren’t the only ways to experience Alaska seafood.
Alaska Fish & Chips Company at the Flight Deck is another option for combining seafood with outdoor dining. Located at Historic Merchants Wharf along the sea walk, the indoor-outdoor seafood bar serves Alaskan halibut and cod, fish tacos, smoked salmon chowder, shrimp, sandwiches and more, with waterfront views that make an awesome backdrop on a clear summer day.
One of our favorite things about eating in Juneau is that the scenery rarely feels separate from the experience. Boats, mountains, water, and wildlife are often right there with you.
Experience an Alaska Salmon Bake
For a meal that feels particularly tied to an Alaska summer, make your way to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.
Here, wild Alaska salmon is roasted over an alder wood fire in a rainforest setting. The seasonal experience has been operating for more than 30 years and combines an all-you-can-eat meal with live local music and the surrounding scenery. The 2026 season runs from late April into early October.
It’s a fun option for families, couples, and anyone who wants dinner itself to feel like part of the day’s Alaska experience.
Pack Your Own Juneau Picnic
Of course, eating outside doesn’t require a restaurant reservation. Stop by Rainbow Foods, Juneau’s oldest family-owned natural foods grocery, and put together your own picnic. The downtown shop carries organic produce, cheeses, bulk foods and other groceries, while its kitchen prepares soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, sourdough bread and weekday lunch entrées.
Then comes the important question: where are you taking it?
Bring lunch down to the docks and watch the boats. Find a sunny spot in Capital School Park or Cope Park. Pack something to eat during a longer day of exploring. If the sun makes an appearance, take full advantage of it. There’s something especially satisfying about having nowhere you need to be except outside with a good sandwich and a Juneau view.
Make Summer Delicious
Some of Juneau’s most memorable summer experiences happen between the major attractions. They happen when you stumble across a food truck after a morning downtown. When you finish a hike and decide a cold drink overlooking Auke Bay sounds pretty good. When you crack into a pile of king crab beside the waterfront or carry a picnic to the park because the sun is out and you’d rather not waste a minute of it.
Juneau gives you plenty of ways to experience Alaska through its food, and summer gives you the chance to do much of it outside. When you stay at Silverbow Inn, you’ll be right in downtown Juneau with local restaurants, food trucks, tasting rooms and picnic provisions close at hand.
