10 Unforgettable Things to do in Juneau This Fall

We mean it when we say that is plenty of things to do in Juneau this fall.  Not only does Alaska’s vast wilderness beckon, but so too does the charming downtown of Juneau, which is walkable from our hotel. One of the top attractions in the Juneau area is Mendenhall Glacier, which is the most accessible of all the glaciers in Alaska.

We highly recommend a visit to the glacier, of course, but don’t stop there!  Juneau is also surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, where you’ll find endless miles of hiking and biking trails to explore and plenty of breathtaking scenery to admire. And for those of you who love the vibrant colors of fall, there’s plenty of that to go around, too!

Set against the green backdrop of the forest, you’ll find cottonwood and willow trees showing off with their vibrant yellows and alpine blueberry and dwarf dogwood trees turning an incredible shade of red.  When it’s time for more adventure, we have plenty of ideas for you.  Here are a few of our top “musts” when it comes to things to do in Juneau this fall:

  1. As we mentioned, Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top things to do in Juneau.  It’s stunning during the fall when fall colors transform the already beautiful landscape. While you’re in the area, don’t miss your chance to hike to Nugget Falls or the 3.5 mile East Glacier Loop Trail, both of which offer more fall views and even some potential black bear and other wildlife viewing along the way.
  2. You can’t visit Juneau without hiking – a statement that is true even in the depths of winter! There are more than 250 miles of hiking trails in the Juneau area. The closest trail network to our hotel is the Perseverance Trail, which provides many miles of excellent hiking.
  3. There aren’t many roads in the Juneau area, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a scenic drive up Glacier Highway north of Juneau, past Auke Bay, and up to Berner’s Bay. The drive is only about 50 miles roundtrip and includes plenty of opportunities to enjoy the colorful fall foliage, take hikes, and explore coastal beaches.
  4. The Mount Roberts Tram is another of the more popular things to do in Juneau and offers great viewpoints of the Gastineau Channel and downtown Juneau. You can also hike up to the top of the viewing area if you’d rather get your heart pumping!
  5. Catch the beauty of fall from the air as you take a sightseeing flight. It’s a great way to experience the far reaches of Alaska’s wilderness, especially if you’re short on time. Another option is to take a helicopter tour to one of Juneau’s glaciers! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
  6. Enjoy a bit of bird watching!  Fall is a great time to watch hawks, eagles, tundra swans, and snow and Canada geese as they migrate to warmer climates.
  7. Witness the impressive sight of salmon spawning on local rivers and creeks!  It’s an incredible sight to behold and is also one of your best chances to view bears in the area, as they fill up on fatty salmon for the winter.
  8. Head to Point Bridget State Park, where you’ll find a mile-long grove of Alaska yellow cedar trees at Cedar Lake. These leaves don’t actually change color in the fall, but they are distinctly beautiful, with their purplish shredded bark and distinctive odor.
  9. Visit Admiralty Island, home of the Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area. The island is home to an estimated 1,500 brown bears, offering unparalleled opportunity to view Alaska’s most famous wildlife.
  10. Explore the many shops and attractions in downtown Juneau, without the busy crowds of summer.
