Have A Grizzly Good Time At The Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary

Grizzly Bear at Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary

Admiralty Island is home to some of the best wildlife sanctuaries and animal viewing areas in Alaska! It’s no wonder why, as this island is home to the largest density of brown bears in North America. In fact, these majestic animals outnumber the human residents, three-to-one! One of the most popular viewing areas is the Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 30 miles south of Juneau. According to Travel Alaska, roughly 95% of visitors to this area see at least one bear during their visit. During the peak season, guests may even see five or more bears at once! Learn all about this awesome sanctuary, as well as other favorite spots on Admiralty Island. Visit Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary

The Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary is a state-run section of protected land, located at the mouth of Pack Creek in Admiralty Island National Monument. Due to the abundance of salmon that live in the creek during the summer months, this is a hotspot for brown bears from mid-July to mid-August. You may also see Stika black-tailed deer, river otter, mink, harbor seals, eagles, and even whales! The sanctuary is only accessible via plane or boat, and all visitors need a permit to access the land. During the peak season, permits are limited and require advance reservation. Without a doubt, this is one of the best day trips from Juneau!

Pack Creek Wildlife Viewing Area

The Pack Creek Wildlife Viewing Area is located slightly south to the Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary and is often considered the more popular viewing area, due in part to the outstanding adventures offered by Pack Creek Bear Tours. Add the Pack Creek Grizzly Bear Viewing Seaplane Adventure to your reservation with Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites. You’ll have a day of exploring this pristine slice of paradise! The tour involves a 25-minute flight to the forest (which is why this tour made our list of one of the best Juneau helicopter tours), then five to six hours of on-foot exploration.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

Like Admiralty Island National Monument, Glacier Bay National Park is a preserve that protects some amazing and precious lands in Alaska. It’s referred to as a “biosphere reserve,” and has been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. In total, there are five glaciers in the haven. Visitors can kayak or hike around the site, getting an up-close look at these fantastic structures. You may even get to see some of the native animals, like moose, porcupines, bears, birds, and more!
