Visit the Treadwell Arena

Treadwell Arena is located on Douglas Island, about a 10-minute drive from Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites. The rink is an excellent stop for visitors who plan on exploring the island. It’s just a three-minute walk from Sandy Beach, and the Treadwell Mine Historic Walking Trail leads right past the building.

The arena’s schedule varies from day to day, so it’s important to check their website before visiting. Typically, a day includes an open skate period, which is perfect for beginner skaters. If you’re a hockey player, you should keep an eye open for the Pond Hockey or Stick & Puck. Pond Hockey is a drop-in game that’s open to up to 26 participants and four goaltenders. The Stick & Puck session is centered around practicing the basics of hockey, with no gameplay. Both courses require you to bring your own equipment. If you’re more interested in figure skating, the Treadwell Arena has a time slot for you! They host a drop-in practice for the development of turns, jumps, spins, and most other more advanced techniques.

If you and your child are interested in learning how to skate, stop by during the Sunday morning Parent & Tot Open Skates. Regular admission fees apply, which are $7 for adults and $6 for youths. The drop-in lesson fee is $15, which includes the entrance fee for one child and one adult, a 20-minute lesson, and the skate rental and helmet. The classes are aimed for younger skaters, ages 5 and younger.

Support the Juneau Skating Club

The Juneau Skating Club is a local non-profit organization with the mission to teach Juneau to skate. If you’re passionate about skating, you’ll want to check out their annual Holiday Recital or their Spring Show. Their Holiday Recital is a no-charge figure skating performance that shows of the skills of the club’s students. The Spring Show is the end-of-season performance, which demonstrates their figure skaters and their more beginner students. If you’re in town for either of these performances, you won’t want to miss them!
