The 2021-2022 Ski Season At Eaglecrest Ski Area

Hit the Slopes at Eaglecrest Ski Area This Winter

With the 2021-2022 ski season at Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau rapidly approaching, we’re getting excited for all things winter here in Juneau.  Opening day is currently scheduled for December 4, 2021. Season passes are still available, and they will be full price starting November 8.  As an added perk, if you already have a season’s pass somewhere in the Powder Alliance, you get to ski at Eaglecrest for free.

One of the things we love most about Eaglecrest Ski Area is that it’s owned and operated by the city of Juneau. That means it’s less expensive than traditional ski resorts and much more accessible for the average skier.  A day on the slopes here is anything but average, though! There’s plenty of big-mountain terrains available at Eaglecrest Ski Resort.

In total, there are 640 acres of skiable terrain, a 1620 foot vertical drop, 36 marked trails, and plenty of powdery backcountry to explore as well. The terrain is evenly split between abilities, too, with 40% dedicated to intermediate and expert-level skiers and 20% dedicated to beginners. Add to this hardly any lines at the lifts, and you have one heck of a ski adventure waiting for you up here in Juneau!

Getting to Eaglecrest Ski Area can’t be any easier, either.  A snow bus operates between the slopes and downtown Juneau, starting at 7:45 am and leaving for the afternoon at 3:30 pm.

More Things to do in Juneau This Winter

If you hold a season’s pass at Eaglecrest Ski Area, you can also add a nordic pass for a season of cross country skiing for just $39. Typically, this pass is $109, so that’s a significant savings for a winter full of fun in the snow. As great as the Nordic skiing at Eaglecrest Ski area is, there are plenty more trails in the area, not to mention some great options for winter hiking/snowshoeing.  Here are just a few of our favorite places for both!

1. During the winter, the Mendenhall Campground becomes a recreational mecca for Nordic skiing. These trails are small, and the trails are primarily flat.
2. Montana Creek Kaxdigoowu Héen is a trail that starts on Montana Creek Road at the entrance to the outdoor gun range. These trails are heavily forested and peaceful in the wintertime. They are suitable for all abilities.
3. Another excellent place for Nordic skiing in Juneau is at the Eagle Beach Campground. The trails are pretty flat here, and you’ll enjoy the chance to enjoy the river, forest, and mountain views.
4. Auke Nu Trail is one of our favorites for winter hiking and snowshoeing. This beautiful trail starts at sea level on the Spaulding Trail and gently climbs up 1500 or so feet to the John Muir Cabin and the beautiful Spalding Meadows, which is a paradise for backcountry skiers and snowshoers. Spend the night at the cabin, and enjoy some of the other winter hiking opportunities available in that area.
5. Herbert Glacier Trail is just off Glacier Highway at Milepost 25. It’s one of three easily-accessible glaciers that are easily accessed from Juneau and offers a pretty flat trail as it moves through the forest and into the moraine.
6. If you’re up for an easy day trip outside of downtown Juneau, head to Point Bridget State Park. There are beautiful meadows to explore here and plenty of wooded trails that are great for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
