Learn About the Juneau Nordic Ski Club

For 100 to 135 days in the year, members of the Juneau Nordic Ski Club (JNSC) groom and maintain trials around the region. The incredible volunteers work tirelessly, using snow machines and equipment bought thanks to donations to make sure that the trails are usable. They groom sections of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, along Montana Creek Road, and trails along the Eaglecrest Ski Area.

Take Advantage of This Resource

Aside from the efforts to maintain trails, the JNSC also keeps their website as a resource for visitors and locals interested in Nordic skiing. On their site, you can brush up on local courtesies as well as the condition of the JNSC-maintained paths.

Strap on Your Skis and Race!

The JNSC also hosts a handful of local races throughout peak ski season, from December to early March. These events include the Eaglecrest Classic, where participants can show of their vintage ski equipment. There’s also the Romantic Relay Under the Stars, where couples can spend the evening skating or skiing together.

If you’d prefer a more serious race, the Buckwheat Ski Classic is the perfect event for you. Founded in the mid-80s by Buckwheat Donahue, this race represents Alaskan spirit and sport. Donahue is famous for his adventurous spirit and great stories. Today, the Buckwheat Ski Classic includes four races, including snowshoe races and 10K, 25K, and 50K ski races. This event takes place in Skagway, Alaska, and is typically followed by a downtown party with live music and plenty of fun! The JNSC offers sponsors the Buckwheat Ski Classic. This event is a must for all Alaskan visitors.
