What Is the Alaska Governor’s Mansion?

Located in the heart of Alaska’s state capital, the Governor’s Mansion is just a 5-minute walk from your room at the Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites. Built in 1912, the mansion is home to current Alaska Governor Bill Walker and his family. The 26-room building consists of ten bathrooms, six bedrooms, and eight fireplaces. Its stately grounds feature the meticulously-carved Governor’s Totem Pole, an art piece commissioned by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Tours aren’t usually offered of the 14,400 square foot manor; the holiday open house is a special occasion you simply can’t skip!

Rockin’ Around the Governor’s House

Each year, the Alaska Governor’s Mansion opens its doors for the holiday open house. Governor Walter Eli Clark, the mansion’s first occupant, started the tradition in 1913. To this day, it continues to bring joy to the entire Juneau community. Alaskans delight in the opportunity to shake their governor’s hand while admiring the home’s festive decorations. Of course, the table of delicious Christmas treats is also a major attraction.

It’s hard to say if the governor or his guests have more fun, but the event is a success every year. Local music groups and individuals perform holiday classics. Children watch the toy train traverse its model winter village. Visitors admire the cheerful display of decorated gingerbread houses. If you’re in Juneau in December, make sure you take advantage of this exclusive chance to tour the Alaska Governor’s Mansion. There’s no better way to meet the locals and delight in the holiday fun!
